Pilgrim's tenth season was rather similar to his ninth, a .500 winning percentage (14-14) and an 8-6 finish in conference play. The season was slightly longer than 1965 though, with 28 games on the docket instead of 24.

Drury and Prairie View A&M were quickly dispatched by the Lions at the beginning of the season, but those two victories were followed by four defeats. The Lions struggled through non-conference play with just a 5-8 mark. LSC competition was a bit of a relief for A&M-Commerce, as they found easy victories against A&M-Kingsville (twice), McMurry (twice), Sul Ross State, Austin College, Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston State, and Texas State. The Lions finished fourth in league play, and missed the playoffs fo
r the ninth season in a row.

Jeff Fitch broke the 500-point ceiling again in 1966, scoring 531 points. Bill Gaines wasn't far behind with 470. Cleburne Brigham led in rebounds with 178, and Gaines was second in that category as well with 174.

Fitch earned his third consecutive All-American veneration in 1966, the school's tenth ever. Fitch and Gaines also snagged spots on the All-LSC list, First Team and Second Team, respectively.
