Basketball came to A&M-Commerce in 1916, when the university founded its athletics program. John Garrity coached the first squad, leading the Lion "Cagers" to a 3-3 record. They defeated Kirkley in their very first game 24-14. Burleson handed the Lions their first loss, a 16-15 defeat. Austin College tamed 23-15 the Lions in their third game, dropping the squad down to a 1-2 record. A second game against Burleson proved fruitful for A&M-Commerce, a 27-17 victory. Austin College would also lose to the Lion
s, 14-10, before winning the series with a 7-8 victory.
