A new coach championed the Lions in 1917. H.D. Phillips took over for John Garrity, and helped the Lions to a 4-4 record. Burleson went down in a stunning 14-4 beat down, but North Texas handed the Lions the same 10-point loss the following game. SMU beat the Lions by an even larger margin, 23-4, and Terrell School won against the "Cagers" 49-8. Thankfully Phillips finally figured out what his squad needed by their fifth game, and helped them win 17-4 over North Texas, 18-7 over the Texas Military Academy
, and 28-7 over Wesley. The season ended on a lower note though with a one-point (13-12) loss to Wesley.
