Will Hill Acker became the seventh coach of A&M-Commerce Lion basketball in 1928. The addition proved to be fruitful for the Lions, as he coached them to at-the-time unattained heights. They lost their first five games, but then put together a record-setting 12-game win streak, dominating notable opponents such as Oklahoma Baptist, West Texas A&M, Austin College, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas State. The Lions would finish the season with a 14-9 record, their best finish in the twelve-yea
r history of Lion basketball. "Slime" Stringer, Williams, and "Fruit Salad" Gardner earned spots on the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) All-Star team, with Stringer getting a nod to the first team. Williams and Gardner garnered second team accolades.
