A&M-Commerce's first 20-win season came in 1929, Coach Acker's second season at the helm. The Lions began the season with a 3-3 record over Rice, East Central, and Oklahoma Baptist, and then caught fire for the next seven games, dominating Southeastern Oklahoma State, Sam Houston, Howard Payne, and Abilene Christian. ACU knocked the Lions down a peg in their second matchup, a 20-19 loss, but then the Lions won three of their next four and ten of their next eleven. 1929 concluded with a 41-28 smack down of
Southeastern Oklahoma State. The 20-win season earned the Lions second place in the TIAA, and a first place All-TIAA finish for "Fruit Salad" Gardner.
