J.V. Sikes became the eight head coach of A&M-Commerce Lion Basketball in 1931. His first season was also the inaugural season of the Lone Star Conference. The Lions struggled a little under Sikes' tutelage, losing more games than they won for the first time in five seasons. Sikes' squad did manage a .500 winning percentage in their first conference season, though, a 5-5 record. The season started out poorly with a 1-5 record, including sweeps by Baylor and Southeastern Oklahoma. The Lions navigated sever
al peaks and valleys throughout the rest of the season, finishing with a 10-14 record overall.

In their first LSC season, five Lions earned conference awards. Flernoy Dean and Curtis Stringer were named First Team All-LSC, and R.K. Gardner, Odell Sikes, and M.A. Smith snagged spots on the Second Team All-LSC.
