S.J. Petty became A&M-Commerce's ninth head basketball coach in 1935. His first season was incredibly successful, as he finished the season with a record-setting 7-1 conference finish and a 16-4 overall record. The season started off with a bang, a four-game sweep of Northwestern State (Louisiana) and Southeastern Oklahoma. Two losses to East Central followed the winning streak, but then the Lions swept West Texas A&M and split two games with Hardin-Simmons. Sam Houston State provided the beginning of a s
ix-game win streak, including impressive victories over Stephen F. Austin and Texas State (twice). A&M-Commerce stumbled in their second matchup with Stephen F. Austin, but the season concluded on a high note with a sweep of North Texas, securing a tie for First Place in the Lone Star Conference, the first ever LSC championship for A&M-Commerce Lion Basketball.

Pettey also led several Lions to individual accomplishments. D.L. Connor, Merrell McKee, and J.T. Russell each earned spots on the First Team All-LSC.
