First Place In the Lone Star Conference
Head Coach: Dennis Vinzant (Third Season)
Overall Record: 53-22, 18-6
Second 20 win season

First Team All-LSC
Bob Carpenter
Pi Vanderslice

Dennis Vinzant returned to A&M-Commerce for a third season, and it proved to be his most successful. The Lions would set a record for most wins in a season (23), tie the record for most LSC wins (7), and won the Lone Star Conference outright for first time ever (third overall). Notable results include the Lions' first victory over SMU, a win over Drury University, and sweeps of Henderson State, Abilene Christian, Texas State, Sam Houston, and Stephen F. Austin. The Lions also had some tough losses in 1939
, including their sole conference loss, a 52-38 blowout by North Texas.

Thanks to their terrific regular season and fourth LSC championship, the Lions played in two postseason tournaments, the National AAU Tournament and the NAIB National Tournament. In the AAU tourney the Lions took down SMU in the first round before falling to New Mexico Highlands 53-37, and in the NAIB tourney the Lions lost in the first round 55-33 to Pittsburgh State.

Two Lions earned individual awards in 1939. Bob Carpenter and Pi Vanderslice both were named to the First Team All-LSC.
