Third in Lone Star Conference
Head Coach: Dennis Vinzant (Fourth Season)
Overall Record: 64-34, 22-10 LSC

The Lions fell back to Earth in 1940, regressing to just 11 wins overall and a 4-4 conference finish. One reason the Lions struggled so much in 1940 was their incredibly tough schedule. They began the season with a game at the University of Texas, which they lost 55-33. A doubleheader against East Central followed shortly after, and the Lions couldn't get the upper hand in either match. The first win of the season finally came in a game against Dallas Railway, which the Lions just barely won 40-37. The se
ason continued to rollercoaster, the Lions trading wins and losses with teams like TCU, SMU, North Texas, Howard Payne, Stephen F. Austin, and Texas State. With just five games left the Lions sat at 7-11, and just 3-4 in the LSC. It took a 4-1 showing in the closing weeks of the season to get the Lions to an 11-12 (4-4 LSC) finish. Despite all their difficulties, the Lions still managed to finish third in the Lone Star Conference.

No Lions earned any individual awards in 1940.
