Year Three under Tulley would prove almost as successful as his previous season, as the Lions finished 1948 with a 14-9 record (8-4 LSC). An 0-2 doubleheader against Centenary hurt the Lions early, but they quickly rebounded by beating Tulsa, Austin College, and taking one of two from TCU. Another win against Austin College and a loss to Hooker-Vandergraff Buick closed out the non-conference season. Wins in conference came against Trinity (twice), Texas State (twice), Sam Houston State, Houston, Stephen F
. Austin, and North Texas. Their success in conference play led them to a second place finish in the LSC, good enough to qualify for the NAIB District Playoffs. In the first round of the NAIB the Lions faced the Tigers of East Texas Baptist and emerged victorious 55-47. Sadly, they quickly fell in the second round to Texas Tech in a 63-45 beat down.

Truitt Ingram and Charles "Shorty" Whitten led the Lions offensively. Ingram led in made field goals (144), total points (372), and points per game (16.17), while Whitten led in made free throws (109) and finished second in every other offensive category.

Ingram secured a second consecutive First Team All-LSC berth in 1948, and Whitten was named to the Second Team All-LSC.
