Tied for first in the Lone Star Conference
Head Coach: Darrell Tulley (4th Season)
Overall Record: 59-36, 32-16 LSC

First Team All-LSC
Charles "Shorty" Whitten

Tulley's final season came in 1949. In some ways, this was his most successful season, as he led the Lions to a NAIB national tournament appearance. But record-wise, the Lions had their worst finish under Tulley, a 14-15 record (7-5 LSC). In their first eleven games the Lions had an atrocious 3-8 start. Conference play proved redemptive though, as the Lions were able to rack up wins against Sam Houston State (thrice), Stephen F. Austin (thrice), and Texas State. This impressive performance allowed them to
secure a First Place finish in the LSC, the school's seventh Lone Star Conference championship.

The Lions returned to the postseason in 1949. In the NAIB District playoffs the Lions seemed destined for a title, knocking out Abilene Christian and West Texas A&M. After devouring the Buffaloes the Lions traveled to the NAIB Nationals, where they took down South Dakota before running into the buzz saw of Baldwin-Wallace. They lost to the Yellow Jackets 82-62.

Charles "Shorty" Whitten led the team in all statistical categories in 1949. He made 144 field goals and 135 free throws, accumulating 423 points in 29 games, a 14.59 ppg mark.

Whitten earned a spot on the First Team All-LSC in 1949, his second overall conference award and his first time on the First Team.
