Third in the Lone Star Conference
Head Coach: Jack Woodruff (1st Season)
Overall Record: 11-13, 5-5 LSC
First Team All-LSC
Ralph Sholars
Second Team All-LSC
Joe Earl
Jack Woodruff became the thirteenth men's basketball head coach in 1951. His tenure was brief (one season) and not very successful. He led the Lions to an 11-13 finish (5-5 LSC). The season "rollercoastered" quite a bit, with two wins following two losses and vice versa. Eventually A&M-Commerce was able to put together a three-game winning streak that included wins over Sul Ross State, Sam Houston State, and Lamar. Sadly the season ended with back-to-back losses, and a third place finish in the LSC.
Jimmy Fountain led the Lions in made field goals (112). Ralph Sholars was third in made field goals (99), but led the Lions in made free throws (136), total points (334), points per game (13.91), and was third in rebounds (110). Buddy Taylor led the defensive effort with 150 rebounds.
Coach Woodruff was able to lead a few Lions to individual awards. Ralph Sholars scored a spot on the First Team All-LSC, and Joe Earl was named to the Second Team All-LSC.
