Bob Rogers took over for Jack Woodruff in 1952, becoming the fourteenth head coach of A&M-Commerce Men's Basketball, and the fourth in four years. Rogers would provide some stability at the post, winning at least 20 games in four of his five seasons at the helm.
The Lions were almost unstoppable at the start of the 1952 season, winning eight of their first ten games, including victories over Southeastern Oklahoma, Washburn, Arkansas State, St. Edward's, Texas-El Paso (twice), Texas State, and Emporia State. After losing 59-47 to Oklahoma City College, the Lions assembled an 11-game winning streak, including seven LSC wins. Texas State made the Lions stumble near the end of the season, but the Lions picked themselves up and won the last six games of the regular se
ason, securing the university's eighth LSC Championship and its fifth postseason appearance. In the NAIA District Four Playoffs the Lions took down Texas Wesleyan and Adrian (Michigan), advancing to the National Tournament for just the third time in school history. A&M-Commerce made a deep run in the NAIA national tournament, beating St. Peter's (New Jersey) and Tennessee State before losing to Hamline (Minnesota) and Indiana State.
Jim Miller led the Lions in made field goals (149) and rebounds (266). Clarence Lynch led in scoring (407 points) and made free throws (147). Shelby Metcalf was second or third in each category for the Lions, accumulating stats across the board.
Coach Roger's leadership also helped several Lions secure individual notoriety, including the university's first All-American. Metcalf was named a Helms Foundation All-American in the 1952 season. Despite his national veneration, Metcalf was named to the Second Team All-LSC. Joining Metcalf on the LSC list were Lynch and Miller, who both snagged First Team spots.
