The Lions really benefited from Rogers' leadership in 1953, winning 23 games enroute to their first undefeated run through the LSC (10-0), and A&M-Commerce's ninth LSC Basketball championship.

The season started with an eight-game win streak, including impressive results against Central Oklahoma, Northeastern Oklahoma, Central Missouri State, Findlay (Ohio), Illinois Wesleyan, and Southwest Missouri State. Howard Payne took down the Lions in a tough three-point loss, but the Lions rebounded, winning their next three. The toughest part of the season came in a three-game losing streak to Southern Mississippi, Loyola-New Orleans, and Sheppard AFB. Thankfully Coach Rogers was able to turn it around
in the next game, a 71-54 blowout of Texas State. That win predicated a 12-game win streak that lasted all the way until the NAIA National Tournament quarterfinals, where the Lions would lose 65-59 to Southwest Missouri State.

Jim Miller, Clarence Lynch, and Shelby Metcalf proved integral to the Lions offense once again. Miller led in points scored (377), made field goals (138), and rebounds (242). Lynch led in made free throws (147), and Metcalf once again filled the spreadsheet by finishing second or third in every category.

Lynch and Miller both earned consecutive First Team All-LSC nods, and Metcalf repeated on the Second Team All-LSC.
