First in the Lone Star Conference
20 Win season
Head Coach: Bob Rodgers (5th Season)
Overall Record: 113-34, 48-10 LSC
NAIA Third Team All-American
Clarence Jones
Second Team All-LSC
Clarence Jones
The Lions returned to their winning ways in 1956, winning 20 games once again and dominating the LSC with a 12-2 conference record. Despite their regular season success and the school's eleventh LSC championship, the Lions failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year.
A&M-Commerce was just 2-3 in its first five games, but that quickly changed with a five-game win streak. Another five-game win streak came later in the season, and in the midst of conference play the Lions also had a six-game win streak. In the finals weeks of the season their only loss came against Texas, and that by just six points.
The only stats available for 1956 consist of the starting five. Clarence Jones appears to have led the Lions in made field goals with 117, total points with 276, and points per game with 13.14, and John Fite led in made free throws with 107.
Jones' performance was enough to earn him the school's fifth All-American acclimation. He was named to the NAIA Third Team All-American list, and to the Second Team All-LSC.
