Norman Pilgrim became the fifteenth head coach of A&M-Commerce Men's Basketball in 1957, replacing the most successful Lions coach up to that point in time in Bob Rogers. Coach Pilgrim made a good impression in his first year, winning 23 games, leading the Lions to their twelfth LSC Championship, and taking the squad all the way to the NAIA Quarterfinals.

In their first seven games the Lions struggled a little bit, losing to Austin College, Louisiana Tech, and McNeese State, and taking one of two from Northwestern (Louisiana). They also won games over Midwestern and Austin College during that span. Soon after Pilgrim helped the Lions find their footing again, and they rumbled off winning streaks of six, eight, and seven games, the last of which stretched into the postseason. In the NAIA playoffs the Lions took down Texas Wesleyan twice in District competit
ion before jumping to the national stage, where they faced Minnesota-Duluth, Northern State (South Dakota), and Tennessee State. Their run ended with an 81-62 loss to Tennessee State.

Dee Mackey was an offensive and defensive force in 1957, compiling 326 points and 251 rebounds in just 30 games. John Fite led the Lions in scoring though, accumulating 358 points. A.C. Black also joined the Lions in the 300+ point club, and Charles Avant filled up the stat sheet with impressive totals in points and rebounds.

Mackey earned an NAIA Second Team All-American nod for his contributions, and a First Team All-LSC listing as well. Mackey's All-American award was the sixth in school history. Avant snagged a spot on the Second Team All-LSC.
