Lee Hires
Pilgrim and the Lions got off to a good start in 1961, winning six of their first 10 games, and 10 of their first 16. Unfortunately the Lions lost their next four, all of which were LSC losses. The Lions managed to get back into the LSC race with four conference wins, but a tough loss to Sam Houston State in their final game ended all postseason hopes for A&M-Commerce. Their final record: 14-12, 6-8 LSC.
Bill Mayes once again led the Lions in scoring, sinking 151 buckets enroute to 409 total points. He also snagged 225 rebounds, leading the Lions on the glass as well. Lee Hires trailed just behind Mayes in both categories, with 292 points and 195 rebounds.
Mayes earned the school's seventh All-American award, an Honorable Mention. Hires snagged a spot on the Second Team All-LSC.
