Things finally turned around for Pilgrim and the Lions in 1962. The Lions won at least 18 games for the first time since 1959, and finished with a 7-7 conference record. A&M-Commerce won 10 of their first 12, including victories over Ozarks, Midwestern State, Texas-Arlington, Tarleton State, Texas State, and McMurry. Their only losses came against Texas and A&M-Kingsville. Another three wins followed the loss to A&M-Kingsville, but then the losses started to pile up, derailing the season. In their final 1
2 games the Lions won just 5, including a streak of four at the end of the season that helped them avoid a third consecutive losing conference record.

Whitney Miller stepped up after the departure of Bill Mayes, leading the Lions in points (401) and rebounds (325).

Miller made the Second Team All-LSC thanks to his individual performances.
