Phil Andrews
One of Pilgrim's worst years came in 1964, when the Lions finished with a losing record for the first time since 1951, a 10-13 mark. Thankfully conference play was kind to the Lions with a 7-5 LSC record; otherwise they may have struggled even more.
The season began pretty horribly with a 2-8 mark, including a six-game losing streak that included defeats by UTEP, Texas-Arlington (twice), Midwestern State, McNeese State, and East Texas Baptist. League play began after that 2-8 mark, and the Lions started to improve. A&M-Commerce traded wins and losses until the end of the season, when they put together a four-game win streak over Texas State, Sul Ross State, Sam Houston State, and Howard Payne.
Jeff Fitch had a very good individual performance in 1964, leading the Lions in points (406), points per game (17.65), and rebounds (141). Phil Andrews was the Lions' second offensive option, racking up 338 points and 86 rebounds.
Fitch earned a spot on the NAIA All-American list, making him the eighth All-American for A&M-Commerce. He also got a First Team All-LSC nod. Andrews was named to the Second Team All-LSC list.
