Coach Pilgrim became the longest-tenured coach in A&M-Commerce Lions Basketball history in 1965, his ninth season. In that ninth season the Lions improved a little with a 12-12 overall record and an 8-6 mark in league play, tying for third in the LSC.

1965 started well with a three-game winning streak over Texas-Arlington (twice) and Prairie View A&M, but then the lows began to outnumber the highs. The Lions lost their next two, and six of the next seven. They entered conference play with a 4-6 mark. A three-game win streak over McMurry (twice) and Sam Houston State was immediately followed by a three-game losing streak to Stephen F. Austin, Howard Payne, and Sul Ross State. League play concluded with a 4-2 finish, including a win over A&M-Kingsville i
n the final game of '65. The postseason eluded Pilgrim and the Lions for the eighth season in a row.

Jeff Fitch and Phil Andrews continued to be the focus of the Lion offensive. Fitch became just the second Lion ever to score 500+ points in a season (502), and Andrews set the school's single-game scoring record with 57 points on two separate occasions, against Stephen F. Austin and Sul Ross State. Robert Robinson was the leader on the glass, collecting 135 boards. Bill Purdy was second in rebounds with 127.

Fitch earned the school's ninth All-American award in 1965, and a spot on the First Team All-LSC. Andrews got his second consecutive Second Team All-LSC award as well.
