Calvin Walker
The year that Americans walked on the Moon was the same year that Jim Gudger came to A&M-Commerce, becoming the 17th head coach of Lion Basketball. Gudger's first year wasn't spectacular, but the Lions did win more LSC games in his first season (7) than they had won the previous two seasons combined (4). Gudger also coached an All-American in his first season.
The season looked like it could be pretty rough at the start with losses to Central Oklahoma and East Central, but then it briefly turned around after a 70-67 overtime win against East Central. The Lions won their next three games, taking down Northwestern State (Louisiana), Texas State, and A&M-Kingsville. Sadly, the Lions once again had to face Central Oklahoma, and that knocked A&M-Commerce into a five-game losing streak. Wins and losses followed rather inconsistently, and the season concluded with a 1
-7 finish in the Lions' final eight games.
Calvin Walker scored 549 points in 1969, becoming just the fourth Lion to ever do so. He also greatly outpaced the Lions in rebounding, grabbing 264. The next closest was Barry Wilson, who had 104.
Walker became the university's eleventh All-American in 1969, and also got a Second Team All-LSC nod.
