Jim Vander Poel
The sophomore slumps hit Gudger hard; he struggled to led the Lions to a 5-20 record (5-14 LSC). It was the fewest wins the Lions had recorded since 1944.
The Lions assembled losing streaks of five, three, four, three, two, and two games in the 1970 season, never once winning consecutive games. Their only five wins came in conference play, against Texas State, Tarleton State, McMurry, Austin College, and Angelo State.
James Vander Poel led the Lions in scoring with 416 points, though Al Mason (397) and Bob LaFevers (373) didn't trail him by much. LaFevers led the team in rebounding with 173 boards.
Vander Poel and Mason were named Honorable Mention All-LSC.
