O'Neal Tarrant
1972 was Gudger's third tough season, though some help did arrive in freshman O'Neal Tarrant. LSC play continued to keep the Lions afloat, as seven of their nine wins in 1972 came in-conference.
The Lions managed to lose nine games in a row, four games in a row, and three games in a row in the 1972 season, and only survived thanks to a five-game win streak to close the season that included victories over Tarleton, Sul Ross, Angelo, Howard Payne, and McMurry.
O'Neal Tarrant took over as the lead offensive option for the graduated Bob LaFevers in 1972, his first season at A&M-Commerce. Tarrant scored 454 points in 26 games. Otis Cobb and Hugo Cabrera cleaned up the glass with 184 and 178 rebounds, respectively.
Tarrant was the only Lion honored as an individual in 1972. He was named A&M-Commerce's twelfth All-American, and also earned LSC Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-LSC nod.
