Gudger and the Lions improved significantly in 1973, finishing with a winning record for the first time since in seven years. They also won the LSC again, the first time in ten years. These changes were prompted by the continued growth of O'Neal Tarrant and the addition of LSC Freshman of the Year Nate Granger.

The Lions actually managed to take 1 of 2 from East Central in 1973, but they struggled through the rest of the non-conference schedule, a 2-5 mark against non-LSC opponents. Everything changed in LSC play though. The Lions would dominate the LSC, winning more games against conference opponents than they had in 17 years. Only two conference losses were by more than 10 points; a 104-93 loss to A&M-Kingsville and a 78-61 loss to Texas State. Despite their successful season, the LSC Championship was still up
in the air through the last five games of the season, which the Lions had to win at least four to stay in contention. Thankfully they did, and after a 78-66 win over Howard Payne, A&M-Commerce tied for a fourteenth LSC Championship. The tie allowed them to return to the postseason for the first time in ten years. Unfortunately the Lions lost their first round matchup against St. Mary's.

O'Neal Tarrant and Nate Granger both broke the 500-point barrier in 1973, the first time more than one Lion scored that many points in a season. Tarrant actually broke the 600-point barrier, setting the new record for season scoring with 668 points. Granger had 571. Granger proved to be a bigger force on the boards though, snagging 314 boards in just 29 games.

Tarrant and Granger both earned significant recognition in 1973, with Tarrant pulling down an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American nod, an NAIA Second Team All-American award, LSC MVP, and First Team All-LSC. Granger was named LSC Freshman of the Year and First Team All-LSC.
