Gudger's squad continued to improve in his sixth season. The Lions won 19 games under Gudger's guidance in 1974, and went 10-4 in LSC play. A&M-Commerce won the LSC Championship for the fifteenth time, but did not manage to return to the postseason.

The Lions began the season well with a 7-4 non-conference record, and then began a dominant run through the LSC, winning three games in a row. They did lose the three games following the win streak, but then put together another win streak, this one seven games long. The Lions entered the inaugural LSC tournament with a 10-4 conference record, and 18-8 overall. They lost a heartbreaker in the first round 80-78 to Sam Houston State, and then took down Abilene Christian 66-62 to win the LSC Championship.

O'Neal Tarrant paced the Lions on offense with 651 points, though Nate Granger came within just seven points of Tarrant with 644. Hugo Cabrera was third with 450 points. Granger cleaned up the glass again with 319 boards, and Cabrera had 241.

Granger, Tarrant, and Cabrera became the school's 14th, 15th, and 16th All-Americans in A&M-Commerce history. Granger took Tarrant's LSC MVP title in 1974, and all three were named to the First Team All-LSC. Cabrera also impressed in the tournament, taking home All-Tournament Team honors.
