1977 was arguably Gudger's most successful season at A&M-Commerce. He led the Lions to a record-setting 27 wins, and tied his own record for LSC wins with 13. The Lions also advanced to the NAIA Semi-Finals, the farthest any team had gone since 1954, when A&M-Commerce won the NAIA National Championship.

The Lions once again dominated in both conference and non-conference play. Outside of the LSC the Lions were 9-3, and in LSC competition the Lions were 13-4. The Lions put together win streaks of three, six, five, and ten games, the last of which carried A&M-Commerce through the LSC Tournament and into the NAIA Semi-Finals. Unfortunately the Lions didn't have quite enough to get over the hump, losing to Grand Canyon and Quincy in the semis.

With the departure of Nate Granger in 1976, Larry McGhee had to step up as the primary offensive option. He did a marvelous job, scoring 633 points in just 36 games. Nate's brother Jeff Granger was the #2 guy, scoring 452 points. Jeff Granger led on defense with 204 rebounds, and Mike Williams trailed him by just 4 boards with 200. McGhee also acted as the quarterback, dishing out 181 assists, a new school record.

McGhee earned the university's 19th All-American award in 1977, though he didn?t get any All-LSC acclimation. Granger snagged a spot on the Honorable Mention All-LSC list, and Billy Robertson and Williams were named to the All-Tournament team.
