1978 was Gudger's last successful season as head coach of the Lions. He led his squad to a 23-7 finish, and once again tied his own LSC wins record with 13; though it wasn?t quite good enough to win the LSC this time around.
The Lions started the season with a win over Texas College, and then lost two heartbreakers to UTEP and Southern Arkansas. Relief came in Paul Quinn, who the school had famously set a single-game scoring record against with 131 points. This contest was surprisingly close though, only a 103-93 victory. Even so, it led into a nine-game win streak that included East Central, East Texas Baptist, Wayland Baptist, and Dallas Baptist. A&M-Commerce entered league play with a 10-2 record. They put together win st
reaks of five and six games, but eventually lost to Texas State in the LSC Championship game. Despite the loss the Lions headed to the postseason once again, but were bit by the Rattlers of St. Mary's, and lost in the first round.
Lee Johnson led the Lions in scoring in 1978 with 653 points, and dominated the boards as well, snagging 295 rebounds. He also set a school record for blocks in a season with 84. Johnson and Mike Williams tied for most steals with 21, and Williams led in assists with 73.
Johnson and Jeff Granger were the only Lions honored with individual awards in 1978. Johnson became the school's 20th All-American, and he and Granger each got First Team All-LSC nods.
