Gudger became the longest-tenured coach of A&M-Commerce basketball in 1980, his twelfth season. In that season the Lions won 12 games (5-10 in LSC). The entered conference play with a 6-4 record, but things went downhill quickly. The Lions lost their first five conference games, and then were briefly buoyed by a 5-1 streak before dropping their last four conference games, including the first round of the LSC tournament.

Aubrey Langley led the Lions in points in 1980, scoring 373. Langley also led in rebounds (180). Mark Austin dished out 113 assists to lead in that category.

No Lions earned any individual awards in 1980.
