The Lions struggled again in 1981, putting together losing streaks of three, three, five, two, and three games. Only once did the Lions win consecutive games, a three-game win streak against Langston (Oklahoma), Midwestern State, and Texas College. The Lions were 9-19 overall, and just 4-12 in the LSC. They finished sixth in the conference thanks to a 56-55 win over Texas State and an 82-68 loss to Sam Houston State in the conference tournament.
Ollie Hoops led the team in points with 598, and Aubrey Langley led in rebounds with 174.
Hoops and Billy Relford made the Honorable Mention All-LSC list, with Hoops collecting All-Tournament honors as well.
