Jerry Matthews became the 18th head coach of A&M-Commerce in 1983, taking over for Jim Gudger after 14 years. Matthew's first squad really stumbled out of the gate, losing their first eight games. They continued to struggle through the rest of the non-conference season, entering conference play with just a 2-10 record. But then things really took off. The Lions entered LSC play and quickly started compiling wins, including a seven-game winning streak. They entered the tournament with 10 wins in the LSC, a
nd then won their first two games of the postseason. But the dramatic run came to an end with a loss to Angelo State.

Greg Johnson led the Lions in scoring with 562 points, an average of 19.38 points per game, and led in rebounds as well (197). Billy Relford was second with 387 points and 187 rebounds, and Tony Coger was also integral on the offense, scoring 276 points.

Johnson, Coger, and Relford were all given conference honors, with Johnson being named the LSC MVP, First Team All-LSC, and the All-Tournament Team. Coger and Relford were named Honorable Mention All-LSC.
