Matthews' team once again struggled in the beginning of the season, and this time they wouldn't be able to make it up in league play. Though they won their first game, the next six games were all loses. Thankfully these six losses were followed by five wins, leaving the Lions with a 6-6 record. Wins and losses were traded for five more games, leaving A&M-Commerce with an 8-9 non-conference mark. The Lions toiled to get back to .500 for the season, but just couldn't find any consistency. They only won back
-to-back games once in all of LSC competition, and entered the LSC tournament with a three-game losing streak. In the first round of the tournament the Lions lost to A&M-Kingsville 86-55.
Tony Coger led the Lions in scoring with 522 points, averaging 18.64 points per game. Coger also dominated on the glass, collecting 153 rebounds.
Coger, Mark Johnson, and Jerry Thomas each earned All-Conference honors, with all three named to the Honorable Mention All-LSC list.
