1986 wasn't quite as rough as 1985 was, but it was still a hard season. A&M-Commerce started well with wins in their first three games, including a 128-58 demolishing of Southwest AOG. Sadly this was followed by a three-game losing streak. A 74-72 win over Wiley College briefly buoyed the Lions, but then the Lions lost the next two and six of the next eight. Their first LSC win of the season came against rival A&M-Kingsville, but it would be five more games before the Lions got their second LSC win. The L
ions would win just two more games that season, including their final game of the season against Midwestern State. The Lions failed to make the LSC tournament.

Dirk Culbreath led in scoring (373), Sam Pyle led in rebounds (189), James Durley led in blocks (16), and Bennett Fields and Rusty Harden tied for the most steals (26).

No Lions earned any individual awards in 1986.
