4th in the Lone Star Conference
Head Coach: Jerry Matthews (5th Season)
Overall Record: 52-85, 22-32 LSC

First Team All-LSC
Ken Hardy

The Lions improved in 1987 to a 12-15 finish, but still struggled in the LSC, getting just three wins against conference opponents. The season started well with a four-game win streak, including victories over Tarleton State, St. Edward's, Dallas University, and Central Oklahoma. The season then got tougher; the Lions lost four of their next five. The Lions continued to fight through the rest of the non-conference schedule, heading into league play with a 9-5 record. Unfortunately the LSC proved difficult
once again, as the Lions won just three games in conference. The 1987 season ended with a seven-game losing streak that stretched into the LSC tournament, where the Lions lost to West Texas A&M 89-74.

Bennett Fields led the Lions in scoring again, compiling 497 points in 27 games. Ken Hardy led in rebounds with 279, James Durley led in blocks with 23, and Fields led in steals with 65.

Hardy was the only Lion given conference honors in 1987, where he was named to the First Team All-LSC.
