Coach Matthews' most successful season came in 1989, when he lead the Lions to a 20-9 finish (11-3 LSC) and their first LSC regular season championship since 1977. The season started well with six wins in A&M-Commerce's first eight games, including victories over Oklahoma City College, Indianapolis University, Phillips (twice), Northwestern Oklahoma, and Bartlesville Wesleyan. Two losses quickly followed though, and the Lions would continue to lack consistency through the rest of the non-conference schedu
le, entering LSC play at 7-5. Thankfully conference competition was kind to the Lions, who assembled win streaks of three and seven games. A&M-Commerce had just three conference losses in 1989: Eastern New Mexico, Cameron, and A&M-Kingsville. Coach Matthews' squad entered the LSC tournament as the #1 seed, and won its first two games before running into a West Texas A&M buzz saw. Due to stampeding by the Buffaloes, A&M-Commerce missed the postseason yet again.

Mike Knorr was proficient on offense, leading in scoring (594 points), made field goals (226), made free throws (141), and points per game (20.48). Knorr also led in rebounds (283) and blocks (11). Larry Pettigrew led the Lions in three-point shooting, sinking 38 deep bombs. Hosea Lee dealt out 91 dimes, leading in that category, and also led in steals, picking 47 pockets.

Knorr, Lee, Ken Hardy, and Darrell Williams all received conference honors.
