1996 was arguably the peak of Coach Peak's career at A&M-Commerce. He led the Lions to back-to-back 20-win seasons, another appearance in the NCAA tournament, and an Elite Eight appearance. The Lions also assembled some dominant basketball, winning their first three games by an average of 30.3 points. Southeastern Oklahoma briefly knocked the Lions down, but they bounced back quick and hard, winning their next 11. The toughest part of the season came in a three-game stint against Central Oklahoma, Midwest
ern State, and A&M-Kingsville, all of which the Lions lost. But a three-game win streak immediately followed, and the Lions continued to dominate the rest of the season. The Lions entered the LSC tournament with an 11-5 conference record, the second seed. They won their first game against West Texas, but then Central Oklahoma again proved too much, taming the Lions with an 89-84 defeat. The Lions headed back to the NCAA Regionals, and this time won their first game, and their second, and their third. A&M-
Commerce finally lost in the Elite Eight, a 79-67 thrashing by Northern Kentucky. This was the first Elite Eight appearance ever for A&M-Commerce.

Darrell Waters paced the Lions on offense, leading in scoring (523 points), and scoring the second-most three pointers (51). Waters was impressive on the other end of the court too, leading in blocks (23) and steals (66). Chris Metze led in assists with 111, and Kevin Miles led the rebounding effort with 280.

Waters and Miles both were First Team All-LSC honorees.
