1997 was the third consecutive 20-win season for A&M-Commerce, and the last time the Lions would make it into the NCAA playoffs until 2004-05. The season began well with an 8-2 showing in non-conference play, and continued well through the LSC schedule. A&M-Commerce went 11-3 in the LSC, losing to only Tarleton State, West Texas A&M, and Abilene Christian. They also beat every team in the LSC at least once in 1997. In the LSC tournament the Lions were the first seed, but once again couldn't win the tourna
ment. They lost to West Texas A&M in the second round. In the NCAA playoffs the Lions lost to Central Oklahoma 107-103.

Darrell Waters was once again a huge part of the Lions' success; leading in points scored (551), and finishing second in blocks (17) and steals (58). Stacy Lamb had 361 points, 60 assists, 1 block and 31 steals.

Waters and Lamb received all sorts of accolades in 1997. Waters was the school's 21st All-American, and the first since 1978. He was also named LSC MVP, and First Team All-LSC. Lamb was named LSC Defensive Player of the Year and Second Team All-LSC. Brad Linder was named to the All-Academic list.
