Peak's final winning season came in 1998. The Lions won 19 games and finished third in the LSC with an 8-6 conference record. The season started well with four consecutive wins, and though Incarnate Word handed the Lions in the fifth game, the Lions then won their next five. At the end of the non-conference schedule the Lions were 9-2. The LSC proved a tougher challenge though, as the Lions quickly three of their first six against conference opponents. The next three LSC games were all wins for A&M-Commer
ce, but West Texas A&M, Tarleton State, and Midwestern State all proved to be too much for the Lions. The Lions barely secured the third seed in the tournament by taking down Abilene Christian (in overtime) and Angelo State in their final two regular-season games. In the LSC tournament the Lions squeaked by Northeastern State 68-62 before losing to Midwestern State 86-84, a heartbreaking loss that kept them from returning to the NCAA playoffs.

Leading the Lions in scoring was Jermaine Thomas, who scored 472 points in 28 games. Thomas also led in rebounds (341) and blocks (65). Swarn Lacy was a true sniper from beyond the arc, hitting 37 threes. Brandon Manning led in assists with 201.

Thomas was named to the First Team All-LSC, Manning to the Honorable Mention list, and Kyle Krueger earned a spot on the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
