The Lions once again had a winning season in 2002, finishing third in the LSC South with a 16-12 overall record and a 6-6 mark in the LSC. Non-Conference play went especially well in 2002; the Lions went 10-5 against opponents outside the LSC. One of their most impressive games came in a loss against North Texas, where they lost 82-74, an eight-point margin. The Lions also looked terrific at the start of LSC play, winning six of their first seven. Their only loss in that span was an overtime defeat by Eas
tern New Mexico. But the season ended on a low note with five consecutive conference losses, dropping the Lions to third in the South Division of the LSC. Because of their late-season stumbles the Lions had to face Tarleton State in the first round of the LSC tournament, where they lost 81-67.

Micah Reed became the leading scorer for A&M-Commerce in 2002, pacing the Lions with 538 points. He also led in rebounds with 219 boards and in steals with 45 pickpockets. Ross Hodge led in assists with 113, though that was down considerably from his record-setting 213 in 2001. Thaddeus Daggett was a wall under the basket, blocking 64 shots.

Reed, Clay Lewkowski, and Daggett were All-LSC honorees; Reed on the First Team, Lewkowski on the Second Team, and Daggett an Honorable Mention.
