A&M-Commerce dominated in 1986, losing just two games total enroute to an NCAA National Quarterfinalist. The Lions went 22-2 overall and 12-0 in conference, winning the Lone Star Conference for the first time. The Lions defeated notable opponents such as North Texas, Angelo State, Army, New Haven, and West Texas A&M. Their two losses came against Nebraska-Omaha and Cal State-Sacramento.

Paulette Pilcik was a huge part of the Lions' unprecedented success with 723 assists, 30 service aces, 109 digs, and 70 kills. She was named to the First Team All-LSC, LSC All-Academic team, American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Region First Team, and AVCA All-American Second Team.

Pilcik wasn't the only Lion recognized in 1986 though. Angie Neylon was also named to the First Team All-LSC, Teresa McLain, Alice Fortes, and Stacy Harris were named to the Second Team All-LSC, Angie Buantello was named an Honorable Mention All-LSC, Fortes was named to the All-Academic Team, and Kathy Goodlett was recognized as the LSC Coach of the Year.
