1989 was Coach Goodlett's first and only losing season. Her team finished with a 17-19 record overall, though they did have a 10-6 record against LSC opponents. The season started off well with a 4-1 appearance at the St. Edward's Tournament, but then the Lions put together a five-game losing streak including a home loss to Texas Wesleyan and an 0-4 appearance at the West Texas A&M Invitational. Lion volleyball rebounded with a 2-0 road trip through Oklahoma at Cameron and at Central Oklahoma, but the Lio
ns had another five-game win streak, including home losses to Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M. A&M-Commerce concluded the season with a three-win streak against A&M-Kingsville, Central Oklahoma, and Cameron, but failed to make it into the NCAA Regionals for fourth straight year.
Despite their struggles as a team, several Lions still dominated as individuals. Melanie Rea stepped up her game in the absence of Alice Fortes, leading the Lions in kills with 456; Kiersten Kile was a distant second with 289 kills. Kristi Phillips stepped up in a big way after the departure of Kristine King, topping the Lion assist list with 1,328 (the rest of the team had 159). Maria Frederick paced the team in digs with 396, and Kiersten Kile had the second-most with 287. Belinda Sheperd (formerly Hess
) led the team in total blocks with 120, followed by Patricia Guerrero with 115.
Rea, Guerrero, Phillips, Sheperd, and Frederick were all honored by the Lone Star Conference for their individual achievements. Rea garnered back-to-back Second Team All-LSC awards, and Guerrero, Phillips, and Sheperd were named Honorable Mention All-LSC. Rea was also an All-LSC Academic team member, and Frederick and Phillips were Honorable Mention All-LSC Academic members.
