Terri Johnson, Lion volleyball alumni, took over at the helm for A&M-Commerce in 1990. The Lions got out to a bad start with a 2-11 record in September, but the Lions started to pull it together in the second half of the season, putting together a four-win streak over conference opponents Texas Woman's, A&M-Kingsville, Cameron, and Abilene Christian. The Lions suffered a tough five-set loss to Angelo State in Commerce near the end of October, and struggled again at Central Oklahoma. The 1990 season ended
on a high note though as the Lions managed to go 4-1 in their final five games, losing only to eventual LSC Champ West Texas A&M. Lion volleyball finished 12-18 (9-7 LSC), and missed the NCAA playoffs for the second year in a row.
Belinda Sheperd (formerly Hess) led the way in kills with 249, and Shelley Brown (formerly McAnelley) also crested the 200+ kill plateau with 204. Kristine King returned to Lion volleyball to once again sit atop the assist list with 776, and Kristi Phillips came in second with 198. Sheperd had 271 digs, just barely beating out Maria Frederick (261) for most digs. Sheperd also contributed significantly at the net with 75 blocks, as did Maria Frederick, who had 67.
Three Lions garnered individual acclaim after the 1990 season. Brown, Guerrero, and King were all named Honorable Mention All-LSC, and Guerrero was also named Honorable Mention All-LSC Academic.
