Coach Blackwell avoided the sophomore slumps in his second season, finishing with a 19-16 record (5-5 LSC), a dramatic improvement over his first year. The Lions put together several win streaks, including a sweep of the North Alabama Tournament. The Lions had a 4-0 mark against Harding and Ouachita Baptist, and also took down Dallas Baptist, Abilene Christian, Drury, and Henderson State. Sadly, the season ended with a three-set loss to Texas Woman's in Denton.
Statistically 1997 was also an improvement. Misty Heller had one of the best offensive seasons ever for A&M-Commerce, smacking down 475 kills in 128 games, a 3.71 kill/game average. Melissa Staiger, a freshman, led the team in assists with 1,082. Amanda Rhoads and Heller were dominant in the service game, compiling 56 and 48 aces respectively. Heller was also a defensive force to be reckoned with, leading the team in digs with 464; Adams was close behind with 439 digs. Christy Edmond had the most blocks w
ith 91.
Coach Blackwell's 97 squad was one of the most decorated squads in Lion volleyball history. Staiger was named LSC Freshman of the Year, and six other Lions were also honored. Edmond earned a spot on the Second Team All-LSC, and Adams and Heller were honorable mentions. Whitney Daniel, Cassie Herron, and Rhoads were named All-LSC Academic.
