The Lions backslid a little in Coach Blackwell's third year, finishing 1998 with a 16-19 record, though their record in LSC play improved to 7-5. The Lions did have two 3-game win streaks, including a string of conference wins over Harding, Ouachita Baptist, and Southeastern Oklahoma in a five-day road trip. The Lions were sitting pretty through September with a 11-9 record, but October opened with a five-game losing streak, which proved to be too much to recover from. The season concluded with a win over
Ouachita Baptist on November 7.
Misty Heller once again proved to be an offensive whirlwind, improving on her career bests in kills, digs, and total blocks. Heller topped the kill list with 547. Melissa Staiger also had an impressive second year with A&M-Commerce, compiling 1,250 assists, one of the five best seasons in assists in Lion volleyball history. Heller had the most digs (357), and Cassie Herron had the most total blocks (132).
Heller earned a spot on the First Team All-LSC, and Staiger, Jodie Fowler, Herron, and Missy Raitz were named Honorable Mentions. Heller also garnered a spot on the All-LSC Academic team, and Herron and Staiger were named to the LSC Commissioner?s Honor Roll.
