Head Coach: Beth Palmer (Seventh Season) - 72-118 Overall; 42-64
LSC Coach of the Year

11/30 - Kearney, Nebraska

The 96/97 season, the seventh under head coach Beth Palmer, was historically significant, as it represented the team's first winning season in 22 years, the last one having come all the way back during the 73/74 campaign. A&M-Commerce pulled off back to back blowout wins over Texas Woman's (95-58) and Angelo State (89-58) in the early part of January. With a 14-12 overall record and 9-9 mark against LSC opponents, Beth Palmer won LSC Coach of the Year honors, yet the Lions remarkably failed to qualify for
the LSC Tournament. West Texas A&M would win their seventh championship in an 11 year span.

Cathy DeSalvo had the rare distinction of leading A&M-Commerce in both points (11.6 ppg) and assists with 77 on the year, while also leading the way in steals (68). Amanda Duke was the team-leader in rebounds with 7.9 per game, while Ebony Mondy was the squad's top shot-blocker with 11. Both Nekesha Paul and Sherry Louison were also in the mix, as both averaged double digit scoring.

Electing to leave the program on a high note, this would be Coach Palmer's final year with the program. She would wrap up her A&M-Commerce coaching career with an overall record of 72-118, going 42-64 against LSC opponents.
