Head Coach: Charles Mancil (First Season) - 8-18 Overall; 7-9 LSC
Following the program's first winning season in 22 years, first year head coach Charles Mancil found that to be a difficult act to follow. The Lions slate of non-conference opponents proved to be brutal, going 1-9 through the end of 1997 with their sole win coming against Chico State. A&M-Commerce never had a winning streak longer than two games, and finished the season 8-18 overall, failing to qualify for the LSC Tournament with a 7-9 record in conference. Abilene Christian would go on to claim the LSC C
hampionship.
Cathy DeSalvo led the Lions in scoring (15.4 points per game) and steals (65 on the year). Susanne Walsh was instrumental as well with a team-leading 7.5 rebounds per game and 13 blocks on the year, as well as 14.2 points per game. Jessica Douglas was the top pass-maker on the squad with 77 assists.
