First place in LSC

The 2019-20 season was a record-breaking season for Lion women’s basketball, and the Lions’ best season under Burton to date. The team tied or broke several records, including tying the most wins in a single season (28), and set records for most wins in a regular season (26), most conference wins (20), longest win streak (25), longest conference win streak (19), lowest scoring defense (56.8 ppg) and highest scoring margin (+18.4). The team won its first 25 games, and most of their wins came in double figu
res. The Lions entered the national rankings after the third week of the season, and with a 70-64 win over No. 18 Southeastern Oklahoma, proved they belonged in the national spotlight. The Lions played suffocating defense throughout the season, as five different players would go to win LSC Defensive Player of the Week, and the team would earn the mark seven times during the year. The team won 15 different games by 20 or more points, and won 23 games by at least 10 points. The team continued to climb the n
ational rankings, reaching as high as 3rd in the WBCA poll, as a win over the defending national champion No. 8 Lubbock Christian put them over the top. After winning the first 25 games of the year, the Lions fell by three points at home to West Texas A&M in their final home game of the year. The Lions lost two of their final three games of the regular season, but secured the top seed in the LSC Tournament for the second time in program history. The team went on to defeat St. Mary’s and Eastern New Mexico
in the tournament, making the LSC Championship game for the second time in program history. However, they could not defeat LCU a second time, falling 57-44. After being ranked as the top seed in the region for several weeks, the Lions earned the second seed in the South Central Region in the final rankings, earning their highest seed ever in the tournament and their third ever bid into the regionals. However, the season was cut short due to COVID-19 concerns, ending the Lions’ NCAA postseason before it c
ould begin.

Five different Lions earned All-Conference honors, with Alexis Bryant being named First Team All-LSC as well as 2nd Team All-Region. She also was named to the All-Conference Defensive team. Chania Wright was named 2nd Team All-LSC, while Dyani Robinson was named the LSC Freshman of the Year and a 3rd Team All-LSC selection. Maddison Glass and Alexus Jones were both named Honorable Mention All-LSC.
